The Daughters of Charity Torchbearers Legacy Society

“The mission and legacy will continue in our hearts. They set standards for compassion we deliver each day. It is a big task ahead of us carrying out that mission. Our job is to accept that responsibility.” Dr. Stuart Marcus during the passing of the flame ceremony.

We have been entrusted with the Daughters of Charity’s mission to serve this community. Today, we invite you to help us insure that mission lives in perpetuity. The Daughters of Charity first came to Bridgeport, CT, in 1905. When the first seven sisters arrived they accepted the responsibility of running the new St. Vincent’s Hospital.

They came with a simple and important mission: To help and heal people.

During the next 109 years, more than 300 Daughters of Charity lived and served in Bridgeport. These courageous and selfless women embodied the best of humanity and their Catholic tradition. In 2014 the last five Daughters of Charity departed. In a ceremony on May 19th of that year, they passed the flame to the lay leadership, embodied both in a statue enshrined in our President’s boardroom and in spirit.

Carrying on the legacy of service to the poor, the sick and those in need is now in our hands.

How do I make a legacy gift to St. Vincent’s Medical Center?

There are many creative ways to make a legacy gift. Among them...

  • Make a bequest in your will or trust.  You may choose to donate a percentage or a specific dollar amount.

  • Name the hospital as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

  • Name the hospital as a beneficiary of a retirement account (e.g. IRA,  401k or 403b).

  • Charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.  These types of gifts offer the donor guaranteed lifetime fixed income payments and may offer significant tax savings.

  • A charitable lead trust offers significant estate tax benefits.

  • Cash gifts.  These types of gifts provide a tax deduction and are easy to make if you have liquid assets that are not needed now.

  • Appreciated stock, securities, real-estate & tangible personal property gifts may offer significant tax benefits.

Most importantly, to make a legacy gift, consult with your lawyer and/or tax and financial consultant.
