19th Swim Across the Sound Stirs Big Waves
Solo amateur Jeremy Virgil of Stamford set a new amateur record of 6:32:26 for the 15 mile swim across Long Island Sound and Westport Swim Club Lane 3 Relay Team was the first relay team finisher in the 19th annual St. Vincent’s Swim Across the Sound Swim Marathon August 5th.

Virgil, an attorney, showed his power stroke cutting through relatively calm seas while Dori Miller of was the first female soloist with a time of 7:33:23 among the seven solo swimmers. The Fair Diego Athletic Club (6:34:06) and Pomperaug Boys High School swim team (6:41:29) finished second and third respectively among the 31 relay teams.

About 180 amateur swimmers will competed in the Swim Marathon that raised more than $225,000 to benefit cancer patients and their families. The swimmers jumped in the water off Port Jefferson, Long Island around 8:30 a.m. and finished at Captain’s Cove in Bridgeport.

The inspirational Team Hanger, comprised of all handicapped swimmers, turned in a solid time of 9:19:11. Andy Davis of Fairfield was the second male solo swimmer (8:19:35) and Tobey-Anne Saricino was the female runner up (7:44:24). Davis, a cancer survivor swimming solo for the second consecutive year, said all the hard work of training was worth it.

“This was a great day. I enjoy doing this swim and we’re helping a great cause,” Davis said. “I look forward to next year. All the hours in the pool were worth it.”

Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among women in the U.S., and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. While the 1980s saw a sharp rise in the number of new cases of breast cancer, that number now appears to have stabilized. The drop in the death rate from breast cancer is probably due to the fact that more women are having mammograms.
