Captain's Cove

Course Map
The 25km mile marathon swim Starts at West Beach in Port Jefferson, NY and proceeds across Long Island Sound and up the Black Rock Harbor to the finish line at Captain’s Cove Marina in Bridgeport, CT. This swim is not tide assisted as the swim course is from south to north and the tidal currents generally travel in an easterly and westerly direction.

There is considerable recreational boat traffic in the Sound but the swimmers are well protected by the armada of support boats surrounding the swimmers. Other hazards include jellyfish which are very common during this time of year.

Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among women in the U.S., and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. While the 1980s saw a sharp rise in the number of new cases of breast cancer, that number now appears to have stabilized. The drop in the death rate from breast cancer is probably due to the fact that more women are having mammograms.
