Captain’s Cove: Home of the Swim
Kay and Jan Williams, Directors of Captain’s Cove Marina
in Bridgeport, has thrown open the doors to the marina and given
the Swim a home for several years.
But being the host for every Swim event means hours of hard work
of setting up and dismantling for her and her crew. As Jan sees
it, all the hard work is worth it when the Swim stages another
successful event at Captain’s Cove. For all her work and
commitment, the Swim named Williams the Volunteer of the Year
for 2002 at the Swim Volunteer and Sponsor Recognition Breakfast
Nov. 1.
Jan is used to rolling up her shirtsleeves and helping assemble
tents, put out chairs and tables and help out in anyway that’s
needed. On the day of the marathon swim, more than 6,000 spectators
and volunteers assemble on the docks to root on the swimmers and
be a part of the festivities.
Behind the scenes, Williams is always helping organizing and
making the day come together.
In fact, the entire Williams family has been involved with the
Swim since it started in 1987. Kaye and her brother Bruce all
help out at many Swim events. Jan and her husband Rob Burlinson
live in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport.
