The SWIM Across the Sound Hartford Chapter was launched in 2005 through the efforts of Mitch McGrath and Kelli Cilbrith of Wethersfield. After attending the charity's Breast Cancer Luncheon, McGrath and Cilbrith were so touched that they had to get involved. The hard working duo now serve as co-chairs of the Hartford Chapter and have adopted the mission of the SWIM.
McGrath, a nurse, knows firsthand the struggles cancer patients endure and that fact has inspired her to help them through her fundraising efforts. Kelli plans to pursue a career in nursing as soon as she graduates from school. In the last three years, the Hartford Chapter has raised more than $75,000 to help cancer patients and their families.
The Hartford Chapter organizes several fundraising events throughout the year, including the SWIM Wine Tasting and Silent Auction, Smile A Mile Walk for Children with Cancer and bone marrow drives to help leukemia patients in the Hartford area. Mitch and Kelli also take kids with cancer to New Britain Rock Cats games and co-sponsor fundraisers with the team.
