Swim Across the Sound

About Us - St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation

Swim Across the Sound is one of the major activities of St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation (the "Foundation"). The Foundation is the fundraising arm of St. Vincent's Health Services ("St. Vincent's") and supports St. Vincent's historic mission of caring for the sick and the poor. The growing support for St. Vincent's throughout the region is a reflection of our mission-driven programs and the quality for our services. Every day, the programs funded by the Foundation touch the lives of many families in Fairfield County.

The Mission of the Foundation is to support St. Vincent's not for profit entities through fundraising, long range financial planning and community relations efforts. Founded in 1984, the Foundation has become a vital source of support for St. Vincent's and all through the establishment of endowments, trusts and other financial vehicles.

Examples of how the Foundation is supporting other St. Vincent's not for profit entities is as follows:

St. Vincent's College - The Foundation is coordinating a major Capital Campaign for the College to increase the endowment and increase investments in classrooms and new career development programs and technology. In addition, the Foundation manages the endowment of the College to insure the future growth such goals are consistent with other St. Vincent's policies.

St. Vincent's Special Needs Center - The mission of the Special Needs Center is to foster the physical, educational, emotional and social development of persons with disabilities and live in the community. Funds raised through the Swim support core programs for early childhood development, adult day care and residential services for those individuals with special needs.

Hall-Brooke Health Services - A major fundraising effort of the Foundation is to help build a new behavioral health facility in Westport. The new facility opened in 2001 and additional capital is needed to expand program offerings for the growing number of children and adolescents who require treatment for serious emotional difficulties.

Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among women in the U.S., and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. While the 1980s saw a sharp rise in the number of new cases of breast cancer, that number now appears to have stabilized. The drop in the death rate from breast cancer is probably due to the fact that more women are having mammograms.
